UI redesign for local news website and mobile app

liherald_project photo.jpg

Where do you go when you want the most up-to-date local news? I'm sure most people would turn on the TV or maybe scan through social media. Sure, you might be lucky enough to catch something happening in your town, but most likely you've just wasted 35 minutes learning that a cobra is loose in a Swedish zoo instead of finding out what all those sirens were that you heard on your block last night.

People who want to be "in the know", want their news fast. Long Island Herald is a hyper-local news outlet with a broad range of coverage in Nassau County, Long Island, NY.  They strive to bring you the most up to date, relevant news, faster than anyone else, and they do. I know that because i'm one of them.

I have worked as a graphic designer at the Herald for the past 14 years. During my recent studies in UI/UX, I couldn't help but notice that our website could use some cleaning up. And because we did not have an app, the desktop version of the website didn't look all that great on a mobile device. Things were cut off, links were too small, just to name a few. So, I volunteered to redesign the site for desktop as well as mobile. This is a project that is still ongoing, but, I will update the process as I go.

The challenge

Take an existing website with tons of information, and make it organized, easier to use and navigate.

Mapping out the flow

User Journey

I created this user journey based on how a typical person would navigate through the app.

Low fidelity to High fidelity wireframes

The low fidelity wireframes became pixel perfect and with color added they are brought to life,

Final design

Like I stated above, this is still an ongoing project. Everyone involved is very happy with the progress so far, but we still have much more to do. When all said and done this will be the go-to app for Long Islanders to get their news.

"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like.

Design is how it works."
